These "Another Realm" concerts are not the usual woodwind quintet music! They'll include music for quintet and harp; quintet with Sioux courtship flute; quintet and mbira (African thumb piano); English horn and bassoon with Native American flutes such as zampoña and quena, deer hoof and seed pod rattles, and rainstick; solo oboe with tuned water glasses Music will include music combining Western traditions with Chinese, Latin American, Native American, and African musical traditions. Thursday, September 17, 2015 at 7:30 PM Same program as Sept 12th and 13th PLUS the Quintet will be joined by Afro-Pop band Timbila TIMBILA blazes ecstatic African rock with an East Village edge. The trance of African spirit possession merges with the trance of free-spirited head-bangers. The surreal buzzing beauty of timbila (Chopi xylophone, Mozambique) and hypnotic dream melodies of mbira (Shona thumb piano, Zimbabwe) soar with stinging guitar riffs and sassy celestial vocals in grooves that are deeply funky, fierce and danceable. The Memory Project at Flushing Library

Flushing Library, 41-17 Main Street, Flushing, NY This program features works by Harold Gutierrez, including his piano wind sextet plus 2 premieres: Retrospectives for Quintet based on the memories of Latino seniors in Queens, and Dreamers' March for the Quintet to perform with the Corona Children's Orchestra. The Quintet is working with the students this month. The Corona Youth Orchestra is based on El Sistema, an orchestra model originally started in Venezuela. Similar programs exist now in the United States, supported by the New England Conservatory. Current NYC-Metro area El Sistema projects include UpBeat in the Bronx, Harmony Program in Manhattan, the WHIN Music Project in Washington Heights and Inwood, and the Youth Orchestra of St. Luke's.
